Joseph Cornell was an American artist and sculptor. Cornell was born in Nyack, New York in 1903 to Joseph Cornell Sr. and Helen Cornell. He created many pieces of work with surreal message and ideas throughout the 1940s - 1960s. In 1936, he made his first experimental film called Rose Hobert. He continued to make experimental films until 1972 when he died of heart failure.
Joseph Cornell also done very well known work with found objects in small glass-faced boxes. He would assemble the items and arrange them into a collage composed through his imagery.
This is my response to his work. This box was about identity. In the box, I included a diary (Anne Frank's diary, a flag, a journal, a passport and an I.D. card). All of these traits of showing identity are all important in a persons life and all of these items are a metaphor for things that can express who you are to a person who does not know you. The lighting of the photos are very stale and I used a flash because it was quite dark at the time; taking away quality from the photo. I like the composition because the shots are framed by the outline of the box I used.
